So, I’m 28… February 8, 2009

I’m not really feeling any different. Last year I had a bit of a crisis turning 27, though I wasn’t sure why. This year I feel, dare I say, good about turning 28. At the same time, I can’t imagine ever thinking I’d make it to 28. Not sure why… was just a weird feeling when I was young. Didn’t think past like 24.
Regardless, my birthday on Friday was spent in a webinar for an hour and a half for work that couldn’t be scheduled for another time, then playing a lot of Animal Crossing City Folk and chilling on the couch the rest of the day. When Dominic came home we went to dinner and then he went to a meeting for the model train club he recently joined.
Saturday was the day of the actual celebration. We went to eat at a burger joint in Dublin called Athens Burgers… meh it was ok, but nothing spectacular. Then the main event – comedian Christopher Titus at Tommy T’s.
So fucking awesome. I was crying I was laughing so hard, and Dominic enjoyed it as well. Both of us were fans of his show Titus in the early 2000′s and I bought him all 3 seasons for Christmas. So after the show we waited in the line for him to sign things and sell t-shirts. Dominic bought a shirt and he signed it, and I brought out the DVD and such a nice guy… he immediately as we’re making conversation pulls the insert out of the box and signed it, opened both cases and signed one of the DVDs themselves in each, then signed the front. And, took this incredibly awesome photo with me:

So I’m 28… and it didn’t go half bad

This time, I totally gangked this from Jenn…
Where did you begin 2008?
I think I was at Lorenza’s house with her and Rachel. That was last year, right?
What was your status by Valentine’s Day?
Married as per usual.
Were you in school anytime this year?
Nah
Did you have to go to the hospital?
I think I might have had to go with Dominic for something once, but that might have been 2007…
Did you have any encounters with the police?
Not in 2008, no.
Would you relive 2008 over and over again?
It wasn’t that hot shit.
What did you purchase that was over $1000?
We got a new vehicle for Dominic, an 04 Toyota Tacoma, to replace his rapidly dying 97 Isuzu Rodeo. And our rent every month is over $1000 so I’d say that counts. I think Dominic’s laptop was technically around Christmas last year, so that was still 2007. I can’t remember if it was after the new year when we bought it or not.
Did you know anybody who got married?
Don’t think so.
Did you know anybody who passed away?
Just the little puppy I’d almost decided to buy. Otherwise, no one I know.
What concerts/shows did you go to?
I went to the Wild 94.9 Comedy Jam with Lorenza, we saw Paul Rodriguez at the Alameda County Fair, and a few other comics here and there at Tommy T’s (Dat Phan, Marc Curry, to name a couple), but no music that I can remember. OH and we saw the improv show out in San Ramon
Where do you live now?
San Leandro, CA
Describe your birthday?
I don’t remember what I did on the actual day of, beyond going to dinner, but the big friend thing was going to City Beach.
What’s one thing you thought you would never do but did in 2008?
Quit my job.
What has been your favorite moment?
Quitting my job.
What’s something you learned about yourself?
I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and dog gone it, people like me.
What was your best month?
Oh I have no idea.
Were you in a relationshp this year?
Yep
What music will you remember 2008 by?
Not sure.
Would you say you’ve changed since the beginning of this year?
Yes
Do you think 2009 will be better or worse?
Better – it can only go up from here (right?)
What do you want to happen in 2009?
Confirmation that I’m headed in the right direction might be nice.

I stole this off Eric’s blog cause it looked like a meme kinda thing, and I am in the mood for that. Deal.
1) Compared to this time last year, are you
i. happier or sadder?
I’m definitely not sadder, but I don’t feel noticeably happier either. So the same I guess.
ii. thinner or fatter?
Fatter – this time last year I’d lost 20lbs from my all time (recorded) high. Honestly though, I haven’t dared step on a scale lately for fear of crushing my own soul, but nothing fits tighter or looser than usual so I’m probably back to that averaged high.
iii. richer or poorer?
Probably slightly poorer, only because both of us got Christmasy bonuses last year and this year just Dominic did.
2) What did you do in 2008 that you’d never done before?
Hmm. Went to Boston. Went to Texas. Quit a job (technically my jobs before were all jobs with pre-set time limits like a semester or summer, and then I was fired from the job in Berkeley as I was about ready to quit). Saw the Red Sox play at Fenway Park. There’s probably more…
3) Did you keep last year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I stopped making resolutions a couple years ago because I never kept them. So since I didn’t make any resolutions, I technically kept them lol. No, I’m not so much making a resolution as I am saying that I just need to step it up on getting healthier.
4) Did anyone close to you give birth?
No, not really. I know people that had children, but no one super close.
5) Did anyone close to you die?
No, again, no one close.
6) What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
Serenity. I’m always stressing about things, even if they’re not that bad. I want that feeling that everything is fine again. Although I don’t think I’ll get it.
7) What date from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Maybe September 19th, because that’s when I quit my job & moved on after almost 5 years.
8) What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting the new job. I count that as an acheivement because my soul was so close to crushed at the old job that I wasn’t sure I’d really be good enough to get a job anywhere else that wasn’t a total half-assed operation.
9) What was your biggest failure?
Not continuing to lose that weight and falling off my diet.
10) Did you suffer illness or injury?
No, not really.
11) What was the best thing you bought?
Maybe my GPS or iPod or Wii. Or all of the above.
12) Whose behavior merited celebration?
What the hell kind of question is this? No one overly impressed me. Wait, that’s not entirely true… in the last couple of week’s my mom’s lucidity has actually given me some hope for her…although I’ve been burned by that hope before I don’t want to celebrate it too much.
13) Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
No one really, but if anyone, just my own.
14) Where did most of your money go?
Rent & car payments I bet; they’re our two most expensive bills. Otherwise, nothing too crazy.
15) What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Now that I’ve been reminded about it through Eric’s blog, I was unusually excited/inspired by Obama winning. But, even moreso, that I was able to connect myself to an industry that makes me relatively happy to be part of – I didn’t think I could do that after quietly giving up on that dream of being a playwright.
16) What song will always remind you of 2008?
There’s a bent appeal in saying “Never Gonna Give You Up” since this did seem to be the year of the RickRoll… but more likely it’ll be “I Kissed A Girl” by Katy Perry just because of the night we first heard it and Katie’s comments lol.
17) How many different states did you travel to this year?
Nevada to Las Vegas a couple times for conferences & the Tahoe area for our anniversary trip, Massachusettes to Boston twice for conferences, Texas to Dallas to meet coworkers and start my new job, and Oregon for Christmas where I am right now, so I guess that makes 4 outside of California.
18) What was your favorite film of this year?
Toss up between Iron Man & The Dark Knight. Zach & Miri Make A Porno was excellent too, but not quiet as epic obviously.
19) What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Turning 27 really freaked me out for some unknown reason. We went to City Beach in Fremont for some pool and rockwall climbing for Rachel.
20) What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Had my new job come with a higher salary – just so I could add more of an “in your FACE” to my old one… and not had to worry so much about money.
21) How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
Same as usual in terms of being a real t-shirt & jeans kinda gal, but I have made slightly more of an attempt to improve some of the nicer shirts I have and find things that are not just professional, but I’m comfortable in and flatter me, which isn’t easy.
22) Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Can’t think of someone I was enamored with really.
23) What political issue stirred you the most?
I was pissed that the US could be so forward-thinking as to elect a black man and that California could be so closed fucking minded as to pass prop 8. The fight’s not over on that one though, I’m sure. It doesn’t affect me too directly as the gay people I do know aren’t racing to get married or anything, but it offends my sensibilities and sense of justice and equality. In ways I didn’t know I could be offended.
24) Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Despite telling my cats “I hate you SO MUCH right now” from time to time when they fuck up, hate really is a strong word. There are definitely some people I’ve completely lost respect for since this time last year (one just yesterday totally lost any respect I once had for him) but not hate.
25) Who did you miss?
I missed my friend Tom, but really, I missed the cool quirky kid he was before he moved away. It’s partially my fault that I haven’t seen him since he moved back to Cali 6 months ago because I’m so afraid that it won’t be the same; he’s gone through some shit and grown up. Of the good friends I’ve had before that moved away, namely Jackie and Tiffany, it was different. I missed them, but what you’re really missing is the person they were when you knew them. There’s no anticipation that they’ve come back, and I never really stopped to think that it’s not really the same person coming back that you knew before. So with that in mind, there’s a lot of people I miss that I actually see sometimes :/
26) Who was the best new person you met?
Some industry people, Connie & Lisa. They were so generous and kind to just take a liking to me and let me roll with them at different shows. It’s a great feeling.
27) Did you fall in love in 2008?
I fell more in love, if that counts.
28) Did you make any new friends?
I hope to consider Connie & Lisa friends, so see 26.
29) What was your favorite month of 2008?
September was definitely exciting – 3 trips (two of which were out of state) back to back to back, with my quitting my job thrown in between.
30) Did you do anything you are ashamed of this year?
Yes…and I’ll just leave it at that.
31) What was your proudest moment?
When I was asked to speak at a training thing in Boston that Affiliate Classroom put on. To have gone from attending their training session in February to them asking me to come speak at their next one in August was a great feeling.
32) What was your most embarrassing moment?
A couple weeks ago in Emeryville. Lorenza, you’re sworn to secrecy, bitch!
33) If you could go back in time to any moment of ’08 and change something, what would it be?
I can’t think of anything so obviously bad that I would have changed it.
34) How many people that you know have either been engaged or married this year?
Nic & Nikki, my favorite since I had a hand in their first meeting…or, was at least there for it! Veronica also kinda got engaged this year, Dom’s family friends Matt & Amanda got engaged, and Katie’s step sister was recently proposed to, and I have to assume she said yes (the 15 month old daughter they have is kind of a dead giveaway as to the answer). I don’t think I know of anyone who tied the knot this year, though.
35) Were you a bridsemaid or groomsman?
Nope – was only ever a bridesmaid once at Jennie’s wedding in ’03. At the rate these bitches I call friends are going I don’t see being one again for awhile…
36) Did you have any vices in ’08?
I didn’t overeat to the point of vice, but I ate the wrong things to the point of vice. That’s really about it since I don’t drink hardly at all and don’t smoke anything, the things people traditionally think of as vices.
37) Was 2008 a good year for you?
All in all I can’t complain, sure.
38) What are your plans for 2009?
The first big thing is going on a cruise to the Caribbean with Katie & a ton of friends from the View Askew message board. I’d like to make it down to LA again for shits & giggles. Maybe come up to Oregon more than my usual once per year with Dominic now that I can work from anywhere. I’m still debating whether or not to buy a puppy from Dom’s aunt, so a dog might be in my future, we’ll see. I also want to go camping again this summer.
39) Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008:
Hmm… don’t know, I’ll get back to you.
40) Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
A couple will have to work…
“It makes me mad…’cause I want to be happy SO bad.”
“How many times can I break ’til I shatter?”

I say almost because we still have a couple gifts left to go before the season is officially done. Tomorrow night we’ll be going to Dom’s aunt’s house to give her the gift we brought and take her kids out to get their gifts – we figured it’d kill two birds with taking them out to spend time with them and letting them pick out their own gifts.
Christmas is going well this year. I got generally what I asked for & even the things I got that I hadn’t necessarily asked for were cool, like the purple jade pendant that Rachel gave me. I have to admit being generally disappointed by my parents again. My mom sent us a cheese spread and crisps thing from Swiss Colony to all share, and I think Al actually picked it out. Mom said she wanted to send us something else though and I gave her some ideas, so we’ll see if she ever gets on that. In the last few years I haven’t come to expect a whole lot from her, although I have to say that in the last few weeks I’ve been talking to her semi-regularly and actually enjoying talking to her. I think she’s sober, but I don’t want to ask, but she’s definitely much more coherent. It’s nice to be able to have a conversation with her and not have to repeat myself several times or hear her tell me the same thing several times.
My dad is unfortunately also becoming a let down in the last few years. At least he’s been giving something kinda ‘meh’, and then money. Money, while not the most personal, at least says “I didn’t know what to get, so get something you’ll actually want”. But this year kinda blew, especially for Damian and Dominic. They sent two big boxes of stuff, so our hopes were high. Especially mine, considering I had definitely remembered to email my Christmas wish list to them. On Christmas morning we opted to open their presents first before the ones we bought for each other. First I unwrapped a 2009 “Use Your Own Photos” type calendar, which is nifty…but for my birthday last year Joanna gave me a cool Ghosts calendar and despite having cool photos, it sat in my car ALL YEAR – I just don’t use paper calendars, everything is online. When I took her & dad to the airport when they moved to SC, she saw the calendar in the car & jokingly brought it up and I explained that it was cool & a good idea, I just didn’t need any calendars. So sending a calendar again is a little… meh. Then I opened the second gift, which I actually really like – a book on the Ghosts of South Carolina. There was a note that there were two editions of this book – they bought both and sent one to me and one to April and let us both know so we could swap and read the other ones when we’re done. Kinda cool…and more freaky to learn of ANOTHER thing that April and I have in common. But then the last thing sucked a little – a big bath stuff kit with apple & wild fig scent – that’s not my cup of tea and I probably won’t use it, although I’ll give it a try at least. Dominic’s only gift was one of those bath stuff gift sets of Adidas brand stuff – which he is most likely allergic to since he’s really sensitive skin wise. I thought they knew that, but giving them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they didn’t. So he’s gonna let Damian try some of that, because what Damian got is REALLY kind of disappointing, and made me feel bad that I didn’t get his gift already. They sent two gifts for Damian – one was a tub of generic so-so tasting cookies from Walmart, and the other was another bath type gift set, this time of Old Spice brand. His immediate comment was that Joanna should have known better since the last time he tried to use OS, he broke out in a rash and she knew about it.
So, what have we learned from this? If you only have Walmart to shop at for us, get us a gift card and save your time from strolling down the bath/personal hygiene gift set aisle. Surprisingly my dad didn’t call on Christmas, and with the driving and coming up here to Oregon I haven’t had a chance to call him.
So yeah, I’m currently in Oregon visiting Dominic’s family. We’re staying in his parents camper trailer, as per usual, parked outside his brother Mike’s house, as we did last year, which is much more convenient and centrally located than being outside his parent’s house in BFE. Also, Mike has cable and high speed internet, an obvious bonus. I’m not really on vacation this week as I didn’t take the time off of work – I am working while being here. But that’s the benefit of telecommuting – I can work from anywhere. I didn’t work Friday because I was in the truck for 12 hrs getting here, but I worked almost a full day yesterday to make up for it, working while sitting around and visiting with Mike.
Dominic got up bright and early and went to church this morning, as is his obligation when we come visit. Luckily the in-laws have given up on me going to church, so they don’t mind that I skip it, and I don’t have to endure that fucking chore.
I’ve never been comfortable in a church, in fact, I’m usually distinctly uncomfortable. The only time I’ve not minded being in church was during my own wedding (which, I didn’t want in a church anyway, but acquiesced to appease his family). Although their other Sunday tradition, tacos up at the house, I’m all the fuck for. Good stuff, and was good tonight as usual.
We exchanged gifts last night after dinner and everyone LOVED their gifts. I must take Bernadette out to lunch or something as thanks for the help she gave me in picking things for people. The four eldest girls, all over 18, I cross-stitched personalized bookmarks for them and they adored them, which made me feel good. They, his mom, and both grandmothers were impressed that I did them. Which makes me feel good, of course. The younger kids all loved their gifts, too: Genevieve went nuts over the Tinkerbell cross stitch kits, Mary Clare liked the picture frame cross stitch kit, the older boys liked the books we got them too. The best pay off, of course, is Gerard (5) and Jerome (3). Gerard really liked the Let’s Go Fishing game, although I slipped and didn’t realize it needed C batteries and they didn’t have any, so I grabbed some today. Jerome’s birthday is the 26th, so we got him some matchbox cars for xmas, which he liked, and a Tonka dump truck for his birthday, which was QUICKLY inseparable from! I hate to brag (lol) but it was his favorite gift across the board – he let Gerard play with the other matchbox cars he got from the sisters, Genevieve play with the Little People Noah’s Ark, and got downright surly if anyone tried to take that damn dump truck away, which he affectionately dubbed “Dumpy” (I guess that’s from a cartoon…). He even took it to bed with him.
Mission Accomplished! I ended up getting a page-a-day type calendar for his paternal grandmother and she liked it, and a small porcelain oval keepsake box with an angel on the lid for his maternal grandmother Nanny Braunger, which she gushed over and declared would be perfect to keep her rosary in. Score!
His parents really liked their gifts too. We got his dad a beer can chicken rack and a recipe book to go with it. He got a kick out of it and can’t wait for the weather to get better to fire up the BBQ and use it – or they may just try it out in the oven. We were at a loss as to what to get his mom and decided to go the partial gag route – we were looking at Target before heading over for dinner last night to see everyone and after walking all over that damn place, we threw our hands up in the air and I walked over to just get some wine for her. Then, we saw the mini boxed wines they sell and Mike commented on how they looked like little juice boxes…and they had one of those little neoprene cozy carriers, so we got her a cube of pinot grigio and a carrier and she actually really got a laugh out of it. I guess his sister Noelle and her boyfriend Jonathan got his parents a gift certificate for some kind of spa day, so she said she’ll take it there lol. We advised her she might have to hide it under her coat lol.
From his younger brother Benedict (13) we received a large Symphony chocolate bar, always handy, and his paternal grandmother Nanny Fawver crocheted some beautiful, huge doilies for us. They must be 20″ in diameter. Celeste gave Dominic a gag gift of practical joke props, and me a little measuring cup shot glass, which I’ve always looked at getting and never have lol. Monica gave me an Oregon Coast shot glass with a lovely pink and purple sunset depicted on it…which I didn’t have the heart to tell her I already have from one of our last few trips up here. They also gave Dominic season 2 of Ironside, which I’ve never seen nor ever knew he liked lol, and the vol 3 of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection, which is welcome. The coolest gift they gave me, actually, is a recipe book that their church had made and sold as a fundraiser earlier this ear. It’s professionally printed and spiral bound and contains 130 pages of “Generations of Cherished Recipes from St. Thomas Becket Parishoners” and Michelle said that there’s a LOT of Fawver & Braunger family recipes included in there, which is why she gave it to me. So that really actually means a lot to have them…gooey brownie recipes from his grandma, recipes from his sisters, mom, other family members. And all the recipes note who submitted them, and Bernadette pointed out one she submitted lol. Even 12 year old Mary Clare submitted some, so that’s really cool.
Anyway, I don’t expect any gifts from Bridget & her kids, though you never know. We’ll see tomorrow…I think I’ve babbled on long enough for now
